Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, one of the world’s most wanted drug lords, has finally been caught by the authorities this weekend. Known as the leader of the Sinaloa cartel, Guzman had been busted at a beach resort in Mazatlan City, Mexico.
The authorities have been closing in on the cartel leader for months now. Over the last weeks before the capture, authorities that have been assigned to hunt Guzman have been receiving numerous credible intelligence reports.
A lot of his top cartel associates have also been captured over the last weeks by the Mexican federal forces. Two of them are alleged to be the ones providing security to the top leaders of the drug cartel.
Last month, the authorities discovered something that resulted to the great developments on their investigation. They discovered 7 houses in Culiacan City connected by secret tunnels and also connect to the sewage system of the city. They almost caught Guzman then in one if their manhunt operation last month but the authorities had difficulties entering the compound because of the reinforced steel doors.
In November, US authorities captured Serafin Zambada-Ortiz, son of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, Guzman’s closest lieutenant. They also nabbed a courier for the cartel which became one of the major breaks in their operation. The courier, Mario Hidalgo Arguello, revealed crucial information during questioning which include the cartel’s safe houses and tunnels.
Various authorities have closely followed five wiretaps, 4 of them closely monitored by the Drug Enforcement Administration while the other one operated by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The wiretaps were what led to the biggest drug bust.
Another prominent name that was captured along with Guzman was the cartel’s communications conduit, Carlos Manuel Hoo-Ramirez. He is the one who have been operating the communication lines of the cartel for the past weeks and his multiple phones were the ones that have been wire-tapped by the authorities.
